Сатурн как бы сжимает и растягивает Энцелад, что и может в принципе являться основной причиной так называемого приливно-отливного разогрева (tidal heating). В этой связи у Энцелада предполагается наличие каменного ядра, которое сохранило бы луну относительно теплой после того, как она уже сформировалась.
Однако теперь группа Купера утверждает, что по крайней мере частично (или даже полностью) аномальный разогрев может быть объяснен за счет химических реакций, которые возникают под воздействием соударений с ледяной поверхностью прибывающих извне заряженных частиц. Эти частицы, называемые космическими лучами, в большом количестве поставляет наше Солнце, а также удаленные взрывы сверхновых звезд. Космические лучи постоянно бомбардируют все объекты Солнечной системы, включая и Энцелад. Такие частицы, ударяющиеся о поверхность этого спутника Сатурна, могут вызывать химические микровзрывы на ледяной луне - молекулы воды в таких случаях разрушаются и высвобождается кислород (тот же самый процесс, кстати говоря, может нести частичную ответственность и за тот кислород, наличие которого зафиксировано в районе ледяных колец Сатурна).
Кислород далее мог бы поступать вниз сквозь трещины, обнаруженные в районе южного полюса Энцелада. Если под поверхностью Энцелада присутствует аммиак ("Кассини" пока еще не может найти какие-либо следы этого вещества, но исключить наличие небольшого его количества нельзя), то кислород и аммиак могли бы вступать между собой в бурную реакцию с выделением теплоты, которая в свою очередь могла бы заставить фонтанировать пары воды, отправляя их в окружающий космос.
Впрочем, другие ученые сомневаются в том, что именно космические лучи порождают фонтаны (плюмы - plumes, факелы) на Энцеладе. Они резонно указывают на то, что в таком случае и другие ледяные спутники Сатурна должны были бы обзавестись своими "гейзерами" (например, Мимас - Mimas). Купер склонен объяснять столь разительное отличие между спутниками Сатурна тем, что на Энцеладе гипотетические скопления аммиака находятся достаточно близко к поверхности, и поэтому легко вступают в реакцию с кислородом.
